1) View the New York Times video clip posted to Blackboard called “Being Multiracial In America” where students at Rutgers University discuss the joys and challenges of having multiple identities in America. This is from 2008 (thus the Obama references), however is still very relevant today in regards to the subject matter: having multiple racial/ethnic/cultural identities and associations.
2) Address the following prompts in a paragraph or two.
A. Do you have multiple identities incorporated into your self-concept? This could relate to race, nationality, culture, religion, lifestyle, or other group affiliations.
B. Even if you identify as having a single enculturated identity and group association, you can use the concepts from this chapter to address the next prompt; Why is it difficult for people that don’t feel they have a particular or singular ethnic or social membership to “fit in” within the society? What challenges to people who belong to multiple groups face?
